2021 Northern Trust Fantasy golf rankings, picks: Back Jon Rahm, fade Xander Schauffele in FedEx Cup Playoffs

The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs begin this week when 124 of the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings take on Liberty National Golf Club in the 2021 Northern Trust in Jersey City, N.J. U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm is back in action, and reigning FedEx Cup champion Dustin Johnson also is one of the standouts in the loaded field. Louis Oosthuizen is out with a neck injury but has enough points to advance. The top 70 players move on to next week’s BMW Championship, and Johnson is trying to become the first player to win the title in consecutive years. He finished the regular season 17th in the standings.
Caesars Sportsbook lists Rahm as the 10-1 favorite in its latest 2021 Northern Trust odds, followed by Johnson and Jordan Spieth at 16-1. This week in Jersey City, Gates is expecting a big week from Rahm in his first event since the Open Championship. The U.S. Open champion tied for third in England and also finished T-3 the last time this event was at Liberty National. He will come in hungry after having to withdraw from the Olympics following his second positive COVID test this season. He has a real shot at the FedEx Cup title and has been on fire all year. He has 12 top-10 finishes in 19 events, and he leads the tour in scoring average (69.429) and is third in greens in regulation (71.62 percent).
On the other hand, Gates is fading Xander Schauffele, who barely sneaks into his top 10. The combination of his T-46 at St. Jude and his missed cut at Liberty National two years ago are huge red flags. The Olympic gold medalist has been putting up great stats all year and is fourth in the World Golf Ranking but hasn’t been a consistent contender. He has finished outside the top 10 in six of his past eight events and now appears to have eased off the gas after his Tokyo triumph.
