2021 Northern Trust final round odds: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from model that’s nailed seven majors

Written by on August 22, 2021

Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith sit atop the leaderboard heading into the final round of the 2021 Northern Trust. Smith fired a career-low and course record 11-under par 60 to seize a share of the lead heading into Monday’s final round at Liberty National Golf Club. The final round of the 2021 Northern Trust was postponed to Monday because of Tropical Storm Henri.

Both players sit at 16-under par at the first event of the 2021 FedEx Cup Playoffs, one shot ahead of Erik van Rooyen. A total of 14 players are within five shots of the leaders, including Justin Thomas (-14), Brooks Koepka (-11) and Xander Schauffele (-11). Rahm, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, is the +138 favorite (risk $100 to win $138) according to the latest 2021 Northern Trust odds at Caesars Sportsbook, followed by Smith (3-1) and Thomas (8-1). With so many experienced players atop the leaderboard, you’ll want to check out the PGA Tour predictions from the proven computer model at SportsLine before locking in your 2021 Northern Trust picks.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed last June. In fact, it’s up almost $10,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

At the 2021 Open Championship, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright even though he was listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. He was also all over Daniel Berger (+220) and Emiliano Grillo (+700) finishing inside the top-20. McClure’s best bets netted over $2,200 at the 2021 Open Championship.

In addition, McClure’s model was all over Jon Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner. And at the 2021 Masters, McClure nailed Rahm’s (+250) top-five finish in his best bets, as well as Corey Conners’ (+550) top-10 showing.

This same model has also nailed a whopping seven majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now SportsLine simulated the final round of the Northern Trust 2021 10,000 times and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2021 Northern Trust leaderboard.

The model’s top 2021 Northern Trust final round predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2021 Northern Trust: Tony Finau, who sits just two shots off the lead heading into Monday’s final round, stumbles and doesn’t even crack the top five. Finau hit 15-of-18 greens in regulation during his third round at the Northern Trust, finishing at 14-under for the tournament.

However, Finau has struggled to close on the PGA Tour, winning just one event since turning pro in 2007. Finau’s only victory came at the Puerto Rico Open in 2016 and he entered the 2021 Northern Trust ranked 176th in driving accuracy percentage (55.70), which could spell trouble for the 31-year-old. If he’s unable to find the fairway off the tee in Monday’s final round, he’ll be in major trouble given the wet conditions following Tropical Storm Henri’s arrival.

Another surprise: Viktor Hovland, a 16-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. Hovland has consistently shown he can play with the best players on tour and he enters Monday’s final round in a tie for sixth, just three shots off the lead.

The two-time PGA Tour champion will enter Monday’s final round full of confidence after recording a six-under 65 in Saturday’s third round. Hovland hit 12-of-14 fairways and 14-of-18 greens in regulation on Saturday, and if he’s able to duplicate that success on Monday, he’ll certainly find himself in the mix.

How to make 2021 Northern Trust final round picks

The model is targeting four other golfers with odds longer than 16-1 who will make a surprising run, including three epic long shots who will finish near the top of the leaderboard. Anyone who backs these underdogs could hit it big. You can only see them here.
