The final round of The Northern Trust has been postponed to Monday because of Hurricane Henri. The first event of the 2021 FedEx Cup Playoffs is being played in Jersey City, New Jersey, at Liberty National Golf Club, which is under a tropical storm warning as Henri is expected to make landfall late Sunday.
A scheduled Monday finish could eliminate the stop-and-start nature of playing through a storm like this one, which would almost certainly occur if the round was played Sunday. Even if some of the players with early tee times were able to finish off the final round, it’s unlikely that everyone would get their round in without the weather affecting play and potentially even becoming dangerous to those on property. The PGA Tour is hopeful for a cleaner last 18 holes to conclude its first FedEx Cup Playoffs event.
However, that might not be possible Monday, either. Rain is expected into Monday so there is the possibility of bumping everything back even further. The good news here is that the second round of the playoffs, which will include just 70 of the 125 golfers who made it into the first round, will be played somewhat nearby in Maryland. Long travel should not be a huge issue even with a finish into early next week. There has been no indication that the tournament will be reduced to just 54 holes. The last time that happened was at the 2016 Zurich Classic, which Brian Stuard won in a playoff.
If it is shortened to 54 holes, though, Jon Rahm is in a good position. The U.S. Open champion led by a stoke after 36 holes and has been pretty flawless over his first two rounds with no bogeys on the card. In two previous 36-hole leads or co-leads this season, he had to withdraw (2021 Memorial) and finished in the top 10 (2020 Masters). He’s the heavy favorite to grab his second win of the year and his second playoff win in the last two seasons.
Play will begin no earlier than 7:30 a.m. on Monday morning, according to the PGA Tour.
