If you’re wondering how SZA did in her big-screen debut, co-star Keke Palmer is singing her praises. Speaking to People, she says “the world is about to be just gagged” by SZA’s performance in their upcoming movie, One of Them Days.
“Honestly, it’s so, so good. I really am just so proud of you and the movie. It’s all, to me, a match made in heaven,” Keke told SZA, who admits she was “scared as hell,” “terrified” and “anxious” to get into acting.
“I’m trying something brand new. All I can do is try my best, you know, and thank God for the opportunity and just kinda lean into and accept it as a growing experience,” SZA said. “I have tons of fears of being perceived on camera, talking, my voice [and] being next to Keke, who’s a superstar of so many multitudes.”
She adds she thought Keke was “larger-than-life, unreal and impossible” before meeting her on Saturday Night Live, where she learned she was actually “so real and possible and present.”
They eventually developed a friendship after spending time on set, according to Palmer, where SZA notes they had “12 hours of real-life conversations” daily.
“We actually liked each other. We was gonna get married at the end. I was gonna say ‘I do,'” SZA jokes.
Issa Rae, who produced the film, also enjoyed seeing SZA and Keke’s friendship blossom. “[SZA] freaking killed it, and watching Keke overextend and be like, ‘Yo, let’s go to each other’s houses. Let’s rehearse. Let’s do this,'” she says.
“Watching [SZA] show up and be present and wanting to do the best job possible — and actually doing it — it just made sense and it all fit together,” she adds of SZA’s performance.
One of Them Days arrives in theaters Friday.
