For now, the San Francisco 49ers are insisting that Jimmy Garoppolo is their starting quarterback, and that he’ll still be their starting quarterback when the regular season begins in a few weeks. If early indications are to be believed, it won’t be that long before Trey Lance takes the job for good.
Lance has reportedly been tearing up Niners camp, and he did not waste much time getting himself on the scoreboard in the team’s first preseason game . Lance’s first pass attempt was dropped by Brandon Aiyuk , but his second… well, his second was an 80-yard strike to Trent Sherfield for a touchdown against the Chiefs .
That’s classic Shanahan-style offense right there. Run fake to the right. Bootleg to the left. Hit the wide receiver deep back across the field over the top of the defense. Lance led the 49ers to a field goal on the team’s next drive, and also completed a 34-yard pass from his own 1-yard line to give his team some breathing room on a drive later in the second quarter.
Lance finished his debut completing 5 of 14 passes for 128 yards and that explosive score. He didn’t get much of a chance to show off his wheels, as the Niners did not call any designed runs for him. That’s arguably the most dangerous part of his skill set, so he’ll have a chance to make many more plays when he gets in the lineup for real.
