One by one, Tom Brady is taking every NFL quarterback career milestone. On a 20-yard pass to Mike Evans during the second quarter of Sunday’s game, Brady broke Drew Brees’ career completions record. Evans’ catch was the 7,143rd completion during Brady’s 22-year career. The completion set up Brady’s 1-yard touchdown that increased the Buccaneers‘ lead over the visiting Bills to 21 points.
This is the third significant record previously held by Brees that Brady has broken this season. In Week 4, Brady broke Brees’ record for most career passing yards. Brees, who retired following the 2020 season, was the first quarterback to throw for over 80,000 yards during his 20-year career. In the Buccaneers’ Week 8 loss to the Saints, Brady broke Brees’ career record for games with at least three and four touchdown passes.
Last season, Brady passed Brees for most career touchdown passes. This season, Brady became the first player in NFL history to throw 600 career touchdown passes. Brady is now the all-time career leader in pass attempts, completions, yards and touchdown passes. Not bad for a player who was the 199th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.
Oh, Brady also has the Super Bowl record for appearances (10) and wins (seven) by a starting quarterback. He is also the only player to own five Super Bowl MVP trophies. Given his production this season, Brady may be closing in on his fourth league MVP award and first since 2017. Only Peyton Manning has won more MVP awards more than Brady. Manning, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this past summer, won the award on five separate occasions.
