Falcons to sign Josh Rosen as former top-10 pick headed to his fifth team, per report

Former No. 10 overall pick quarterback Josh Rosen has reportedly found a new NFL home. According to ESPN’s Jordan Schultz, Rosen is signing with the Atlanta Falcons. Backup quarterback AJ McCarron went down with a torn ACL this past weekend, so Arthur Smith and Co. were in the market for a signal-caller.
It will be the fifth team in four years for Rosen, who was recently waived by the San Francisco 49ers as they began their roster cuts. He joined the team late last year after being claimed off of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ practice squad, but did not see any action in the regular season. In the 49ers’ first preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs last week, Rosen led the team in passing — completing 10 of 15 passes for 93 yards — but also threw an interception.
The former UCLA star was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. In his rookie season, he went 3-10 as a starter while throwing for 2,278 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Arizona wasn’t exactly the best place to play, as the franchise scrapped its entire coaching staff after just one season, and the new regime headed by Kliff Kingsbury had their eye on Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Rosen was then traded to the Miami Dolphins, and he played in six games with three starts. In those six contests, he threw for 567 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions. After the Dolphins drafted Tua Tagovailoa the next year, he was waived before the regular season and signed with the Buccaneers — joining their practice squad.
Rosen has had a tough career up to this point, but the Falcons could mark a legitimate new beginning for him if he can prove to the coaching staff that he’s worth a roster spot. With McCarron out for the year, Matt Ryan and rookie Feleipe Franks are the only two quarterbacks on roster. Smith helped Ryan Tannehill revive his career in Tennessee; maybe he can turn things around for Rosen.
