Why the Chargers can cover

Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert has been red-hot, with 300 or more passing yards in three of his last four games. He has fared well against Las Vegas, with 640 yards passing, five touchdowns, and a 112.4 rating in two games. In three games this season, he has completed 88-of-126 passes for 956 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 6.8 yards per attempt. He has been picked off three times, but has a rating of 97.8.

His favorite receiver has been Mike Williams, who leads the team with 22 receptions for 295 yards (13.4 average) and four touchdowns. He had five touchdowns all of last year. Williams has five explosive plays of 20 yards or more and converted 16 first downs.

Why the Raiders can cover

Despite that, Los Angeles is not a lock to cover the Raiders vs. Chargers spread. That’s because Las Vegas quarterback Derek Carr leads the NFL in passing yards (1,203) and is second in completions (88) and attempts (136). Twenty-eight percent of his passes have traveled 15 or more yards downfield, the second-highest rate in the NFL. Last week, Carr completed 26-of-43 passes (60.5 percent) for 386 yards and two touchdowns with one interception and a 95.7 rating.

Carr has one of the top wide receiver groups in the league. The Raiders are the only team to boast four 200-yard receivers this year. Henry Ruggs III is 15th in the NFL with 237 receiving yards, while Darren Waller is 18th and second among tight ends with 224. Bryan Edwards is 24th with 210, while Hunter Renfrow is tied for 28th with 204. Waller’s 33 targets are tied for the second-most in the league behind Green Bay’s Davante Adams, who has 34.
