The quarterback battle in New England is over. It is officially the Mac Jones era for the Patriots. On Tuesday, the Patriots released quarterback Cam Newton, who was the starter throughout the 2020 season.
Newton’s time in New England was a bit of a rollercoaster, from impressing early on last season, then seriously struggling, missing games due to COVID-19 and then this year missing some time at training camp due to a misunderstanding of the NFL‘s COVID-19 protocols.
The 32-year-old was the presumed starter for the regular season, but then Jones made things a bit more interesting, impressing at camp and in the preseason. Head coach Bill Belichick had not yet named a starter prior to Tuesday morning, but now with Newton gone we know who is getting that QB1 spot.
Jones was taken in the first round of the 2021 draft and will be the will be the first rookie starting QB for the Patriots since Drew Bledsoe in 1993. The football world had a lot to say following the news of Newton’s release. Here are some of the best tweets:
Many people are bringing back this old Newton commercial:
Where is Newton heading next? Possibly Houston?
Jones previously stated he would be ready when it was his time.
Patriots fans thanked Newton for what he brought to the team in his short time there.
Some are taking a look back at the former MVP’s prime:
