Fresh off his first preseason action , Justin Fields has a new bodyguard. Longtime Philadelphia Eagles tackle Jason Peters signed a deal with the Chicago Bears , according to his agents at Elite Loyalty Sports LLC.
Peters spend the last 12 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he became one of the best left tackles in the league. He made seven Pro Bowls and was a six-time All-Pro (two first, four second) with the Eagles, after making the Pro Bowl twice in five seasons with the Bills at the beginning of his career.
When asked if Peters was joining the team as a backup, Bears coach Matt Nagy was definitive: “No. He’s coming in here to compete to be the left tackle.”
Peters’ play dropped off as he got deeper and deeper into his 30s (he played last season at age 38) and over the last several years he began experiencing injury issues as well. After averaging 13 games per season from 2009 through 2016, Peters played just 44 of 64 possible games from 2017 through 2020.
The Bears waived their own longtime starting left tackle, Charles Leno, earlier this offseason, seemingly to make room for second-round pick Teven Jenkins in the lineup. Jenkins, who played on the right side during his college career, has instead been sidelined for all of training camp with a back injury.
Signing Peters gives Chicago a veteran option on the left side of the line in case Jenkins cannot get back on the field quickly, and a nice security blanket for Fields whenever he steps into the lineup in place of Andy Dalton .
