Eagles vs. Patriots odds, picks: 2021 NFL preseason Week 2 predictions, best bets from expert on 32-17 roll

Written by on August 19, 2021

The New England Patriots believe they found their quarterback of the future when they selected Alabama’s Mac Jones with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. New England took a long look at Jones in its NFL preseason-opener and likely will do so again when it visits the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Jones played five series in the Patriots’ 22-13 victory over Washington last week, with two of the drives resulting in field goals, while veteran Cam Newton called it a night after the team’s first two possessions. The Eagles also played their first exhibition game at home, losing 24-16 to Pittsburgh last Thursday.

Kickoff from Lincoln Financial Field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. New England is a one-point favorite in the latest Patriots vs. Eagles odds from Caesars Sportsbook, down a half-point from the opener, while the over-under for total points scored is 38. Why the Patriots can cover

Jones handled himself well in his first action against NFL players, completing 13-of-19 passes for 87 yards. New England coach Bill Belichick has stated that Newton is the team’s starting quarterback, but if the 22-year-old Jones plays well in the final two preseason games, he may reverse his decision. Jones was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy last year after completing 77.4 percent of his passes for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns with only four interceptions.

Kristian Wilkerson is making a case to become one of the top receivers for the Patriots, as he had a team-high six receptions for 39 yards in Week 1 of the preseason. Undrafted out of Southeast Missouri State, the 24-year-old was signed by New England after being cut by Tennessee last September and appeared in one game without making a catch. On the ground, 2021 fourth-round draft pick Rhamondre Stevenson had a superb debut against Washington, rushing 10 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns, and could challenge Damien Harris for the No. 1 job.

Why the Eagles can cover

The Eagles made significant changes in the offseason, sending Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts and hiring Nick Sirianni as head coach. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to open the season as Philadelphia’s starting quarterback and provides big-play ability every time he touches the ball. Hurts started the final four games last season, completing 51.9 percent of his throws for 6.9 yards per attempt. He also proved to be lethal with his legs, rushing for 272 yards and three scores on the ground during that span. Hurts figures to get playing time on Thursday night while he continues to implement Sirianni’s new offensive scheme.

Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco is also expected to get his shot to impress on Thursday against the Patriots. Last week against the Steelers, Flacco completed 10-of-17 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown. A former Super Bowl MVP, Flacco knows how to decipher defensive schemes, which could help Philadelphia secure the victory on its home turf.
